The cone system measures the heat of the kiln and the time the clay body burns in the kiln. The taper is essential when firing so you know when your kiln has reached the required temperature and whether the kiln is heating evenly. Each cone has a number assigned to it that corresponds to a specific temperature range.

Oxidation and reduction are related to the amount of oxygen present in the kiln when the clay is fired. An oxidized atmosphere has a lot of oxygen, while a reduced atmosphere has very little. This can change the texture of your clay and interact with special glazes.

Electric furnaces are more popular in both homes and professional studios because of their ease of setup and convenience. Electric furnaces work well for low and medium fire clays, while gas furnaces work well for high fire clays. Compared to gas furnaces, electric furnaces do not require special permits. Gas firing generally results in a more earthy color and can be used in reduced firing to achieve interesting surface textures.

Low-fire glass is fired at 1845 degrees F. Low-fire glaze is great when you have a very specific, controlled design in mind. The resulting colors can be bright and predictable and don’t bleed into each other much.
